Measure your luggage to ensure you are within the cruise regulations.

Most cruise lines limit the amount of luggage vacationers are allowed to bring on board with them. Though each cruise line has its own rules and regulations regarding luggage, a traveler is generally allowed to bring two suitcases and a carry-on item aboard with him. Some cruise lines also restrict luggage based on size and weight.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Weigh your luggage on your personal scale at home. If your scale is not large enough, take it to a store that has a large scale for customers to weigh themselves before shopping.

    • 2

Measure the width. Include in the measurement any ornamental items on the luggage or side handles that may stick out. Place your suitcase flat on the floor, on your bed or on a table so it is vertical when you look at it. Hold the end of the measuring tape on the left side of the suitcase and run it across the top to the furthest point on the right side.

    • 3

Keep the suitcase lying on the flat surface and place the tape measure on the suitcase where it meets the table. Measure the height by running the tape measure up the side of the case. Include in the measurement any ornamental items and pockets that may stick out.

    • 4

Measure the length. With the suitcase still lying on a flat surface place the tape measure at the top, including the handle in the measurement. Run the tape measure down the front to the bottom, including any wheels on the bottom.

    • 5

Add the height, the length and the width together. The total is the suitcase's amount of linear inches. This number may be required by your cruise line or airline when flying to the port.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are flying, make sure to check the limitations for the airline, which may be different than the cruise line. You may be required to pay additional fees to fly with your luggage.

  • Some cruise lines do not require the length measurement. However, it is a good idea to measure it because your airline may require it for flying with your luggage to the port.
