How to Make Earrings Out of Anything

Making hanging earrings is easier than you think.

If you can punch a hole in it, you can probably make an earring out if it. Finding new and unique lightweight items to turn into a pair of earrings is a terrific way to make jewelry that goes with every outfit you own. Your new earrings will be one-of-a-kind, and personal. Creating simple hanging earrings with any material is easy and will take you less than an hour.

Things You'll Need

• Two lightweight objects, as desired
• One pair French earring wires
• Two ¼-inch round jump rings
• Awl
• Hammer
• Jewelry pliers
• Jewelry glue

Instructions

1. 

   Use an awl and hammer to make a hole to hang your objects.

   Take the first small, lightweight object you've chosen for your earring and punch a small hole 1/8-inch from the top of the object with an awl and hammer.

2. Using small jewelry pliers, slightly twist a ¼-inch round jump ring open.

3. Hang the earring object on the jump ring; then hang the jump ring on the loop end of a French earring wire.

4. 

   Jewelry pliers have small tips to work with jewelry.

   Twist the jump ring closed using the jewelry pliers, and place a small drop of jewelry glue on the seam of the jump ring to secure it permanently.

5. Repeat the process for other earring to complete the pair.

Tips & Warnings

• Add multiple lightweight items like chain or ribbon to the earrings to create more movement in the piece.

• Make sure the items you select are appropriately light in weight, and will not pull excessively on your earlobes.
