Bruno Mars plays up his vintage-inspired pompadour with retro clothing and accessories.

Pompadours are a dramatic hairstyle that surfaced during the 1950s among musical legends such as Elvis Presley and, earlier, Frank Sinatra. The style has persevered and is still worn by those who appreciate the vintage rock-and-roll (or rockabilly) look and even current stars, such as singer Bruno Mars, can be seen sporting the pompadour. Get the pompadour style by using the right products and the proper technique. Complete the look with a tight, white t-shirt and dark, cuffed jeans. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Start with damp, freshly washed hair. Brush it to remove any tangles.

    • 2

Squirt a quarter-size amount of gel into your palm and distribute evenly through your hair.

    • 3

Flip your head over and aim the nozzle of a blow dryer at the roots. Blast the roots with hot air. Drying the roots in this manner will give the pompadour life and height. Once the roots are dry, flip your head back up.

    • 4

Brush your hair from the crown forward while blasting it from behind with the blow dryer. This will cause your hair to dry in an outward position. Stroke the brush from crown to forehead, following the brush with the hair dryer. Continue this motion until the hair is dry.

    • 5

Scoop out a grape-size amount of pomade and rub lightly between your hands. Apply the pomade to your hair by running your palms along the top of your head, from the crown forward. Use your hands to shape the pompadour into a peak in the center of your head.

    • 6

Shape the front of the pompadour, using a comb. Lightly comb the front of the pompadour up until it is as high as you'd like and comb back along the top of the hair. Continue combing the pompadour up until it is smooth and even from every angle.

    • 7

Look at the pompadour from the side. It should create a wedge shape that tapers from the highest part at the front down to the back. Blend the hair using your comb until the taper looks gradual and polished.

    • 8

Comb the sides of your hair smoothly back.

    • 9

Spray the finished product with maximum-hold hairspray.
