How to Make a Stash Rock
If you need to hide a small object, for example, the spare key to your house, you can make a fake, hollow rock in which to stash it. An ordinary object like a rock is inconspicuous, and therefore, it makes a safe hiding place. A stash rock hidden among real stones is difficult to spot if it is made correctly. You can share the stash rock's location with people you trust, such as your children, relatives and close friends, so that they can enter your house in an emergency.

1
Get a medium-sized foam block at a crafts specialty store. Remember that you will be carving down the foam block, so choose one of an appropriate size depending on how large or small you want your stash rock to be.
-
2
Carve down your foam block into a rock-like sculpture. You can model your foam block against an actual rock to give you an idea of how to form the natural bumps, ridges and imperfections.

3
Spray paint the foam rock with black spray paint; this will serve as the base color. Allow the black paint to dry, and then use the gray spray paint; this will imitate the color of an ordinary rock. Apply patches of white spray paint to make the rock look realistic. Allow the paint to dry.

4
Carve a small hollow in the foam rock in which to hide the key or other small object; retain the chunk you carved out, since it will fit snugly into the hollow to conceal what you are stashing.
-
5
Coat the entire foam rock in rubber cement and allow it to dry completely; the rubber cement will act as a sealant and protect it against rain and intense heat.
-
6
Apply artificial moss to your stash rock if so desired; this will give it a natural, weathered look.
