How to Make Personal Timelines for Kids in Table Format
Everyone has their own history, even children. Helping children discover their history gives them a sense of pride and belonging. A personal timeline using memorable milestones, such as the first day of preschool or the first time a child rode a bike without training wheels, makes for an art project that is both engaging and educational. Using a table format is a effective way to build a personal timeline that is simple enough for children of all ages.

1
Help the children think of at least five major events in their life. The first event will be the child's birth. Depending on the age group, more events can be added. For example, children in middle school might be able to think of seven or eight memorable events.
-
2
Help the children write these events down on scratch paper in chronological order. Label each event with the corresponding year. Older children can write the events themselves using words of their choice, and may also know the exact month or date of their milestones.

3
Ask the children to think of a picture to draw for each event.
-
4
Draw a table on the poster board using the yardstick. This could be as simple as drawing a large rectangle divided in sections to create a horizontal or vertical series of boxes.
-
5
Help the children transfer their events from the scratch paper to the poster board. Draw and color the picture for each event into the appropriate section using pencils, crayons and markers.
