How to Make a Sneaker Costume
Rather than settle for a traditional Halloween costume, such as a witch, ghost or monster, make a costume that stands out among the trick-or-treating crowd. Use your creativity to create a sneaker costume constructed from a simple appliance box and a variety of colored paints. The one-of-a-kind costume is sure to turn goblin heads come Halloween night.

- Appliance box

- Tape

Set the appliance box on a tarp in a well-ventilated area, preferably outside or in a garage. Remove any tape that may be attached to the box. Cover the outside of the entire box with black paint. Several coats may be necessary to cover any wording on the box. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.

Tape the top of the box closed, temporarily, with a single piece of tape. Draw a circle on the top of the box. The circle should be large enough to allow your head to fit through it. Remove the piece of tape and cut the circle out of the box. Close the box again with a single piece of tape to hold the top in place. Slip the box over your head to ensure a proper fit.

Mark an area for your arms right below the top of the box on two adjacent sides. Draw the two circles and cut them out. Again, place the box over your head. Slip your head through the top opening and your arms through the holes in the side of the box.

Flip the box on its top and temporarily close the bottom with a single piece of tape. Mark two half circles on the bottom to accommodate your legs. Cut out the half circles. Remove the tape, place the box over your head and make the leg openings the appropriate size. The bottom of the box will remain open until you are ready to wear your costume. At that point you will secure the bottom with tape.

Set the box on the paint tarp and draw a sneaker design on the box using white chalk. On the right and left sides of the box -- the sides that contain the arm holes -- make a sketch of the sides of a sneaker. Draw the bottom of a shoe on the back of the box. The front of the box should contain a drawing of the shoe's tongue and laces.

Determine the colors of your shoe and paint accordingly. Allow the box to dry completely.

Wear the costume by placing the box over your head. Slip your arms through the side holes. Press the flaps -- with the half circles -- of the bottom of the box up around your legs. Secure the box around your legs using a couple pieces of tape. Keep tape with you during the evening in case you need to remove the costume to use the restroom.
