How to Replace a Square D PumpTrol

How to Replace a Square D PumpTrol thumbnail
A working PumpTrol helps deliver proper pressure at the faucet.

The Square D PumpTrol is a pressure switch manufactured by Schneider Electric. It monitors the pressure in a pump-driven plumbing system and tells the pump when to turn on and off. When adjusted properly, it extends the life of the pump by reducing its on/off cycles. It also assures that water is delivered at a reliable pressure to the faucets and showers. You may need to replace your PumpTrol if it becomes damaged or obstructed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the PumpTrol and water pump at the electrical distribution panel. Confirm the power is off by touching a non-contact voltage detector to the wire's insulation. Turn off the water at a valve that is upstream of the PumpTrol. Open a faucet to remove the pressure in the plumbing.

    • 2

Remove the bolt that secures the cover with a wrench. Pull the cover off and set aside.

    • 3

Unscrew each wire from its terminal and pull them out. As you remove each wire, write its terminal name on a piece of painter's tape and stick the tape to the wire. This helps when reinstalling the new PumpTrol.

    • 4

Loosen the wire compression mechanism with a screwdriver and pull the wires out the side of the PumpTrol. Be careful not to remove the tape from the wires.

    • 5

Unscrew the device from the pipe by turning the whole unit counterclockwise. Set the old unit aside. Shine a flashlight down the pipe to assure there are no blockages. If there are, they need to be removed before installing the new PumpTrol.

    • 6

Clean the plumber's tape from the pipe threads and wrap new plumber's tape clockwise around the pipe. Three or four full wraps around the pipe threads assures a leak-free connection.

    • 7

Twist the new PumpTrol on the pipe turning it clockwise. Turn the device until it is very tight without damaging the PumpTrol or the pipe.

    • 8

Insert the wires through the access hole in the side of the PumpTrol and secure by tightening the compression mechanism.

    • 9

Insert the wires into the terminals as marked on the painter's tape. Tighten the terminals down to secure the wires.

    • 10

Adjust the PumpTrol's cut-out pressure by turning the small bolt counterclockwise with a wrench to lower the pressure and clockwise to raise the pressure.

    • 11

Adjust the PumpTrol's cut-in pressure by turning the large bolt counterclockwise with a wrench to lower the pressure and clockwise to raise the pressure.

    • 12

Reinstall the PumpTrol's cover. Turn the water back on and check for leaks at the connection to the pipe.

Tips & Warnings

  • The correct cut-in and cut-out pressures depend on your water pump's specifications. Look in the pump's owner's manual for the correct settings.
