How to Make a Cut-Out Helmet

Perfect for medieval-themed parties or rainy day activities, a knight's helmet will transform your young warrior into an aristocrat. This craft is best suited to the younger crafter and can be completed in an hour. Easy to make, and requiring very little by way of supplies, these knight's helmets will really get the creative juices flowing. You can use metallic cardboard, which is available from craft and art shops, or you can paint regular poster board with metallic paints.

Instructions

    • 1

Download helmet templates from the Internet. Several patterns are available on crafting websites (see References). If you would like to create your own template, practice some shapes on the newspaper before cutting them out of cardboard. There should be a single pattern for the helmet, two face plates and a nose plate.

    • 2

Print the helmet template onto plain paper. Cut the pieces of the template out, and stick them together with office tape. Trace the template onto the metallic cardboard. Cut the helmet shape out with scissors.

    • 3

Print templates for the face and nose plates. Trace them out onto the metallic cardboard and cut out.

    • 4

Pull the side sections of the helmet together at the back, and staple securely. Hold the two sides together, and try the helmet onto your little knight's head before stapling. Adjust accordingly.

    • 5

Pull the top flap over and staple it at the back. Staple the front flaps on the helmet down. Staple the nose and face plates to each other. Staple them onto the helmet at the top and bottom.

    • 6

Use the paint to decorate your helmet with family crests or the names of your brave knights.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add feathers to the helmet for a more festive look.

  • Staple a length of hat elastic to the sides of the helmet. The elastic should go under the chin if the helmet is falling off.

  • You can print out crests and other decorations onto colored poster board and glue them to the helmet if you like.

  • Markers, stickers and glitter can all be used to embellish your knight's helmet.

  • Supervise young crafters when they are using the scissors.
