Origami sumo wrestlers are not only fun to make, they also make a fun game to play with friends and family when used with an origami sumo wrestling ring. Sumo wrestlers are simple to create and can be made with no previous knowledge of origami.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the paper in half so that the edges meet. Fold it in half again to make a square, then crease all folds cleanly. Unfold the paper and fold it in half again diagonally so that two opposite corners meet. Unfold and fold diagonally again with the other two corners to make an X-shaped crease on the paper. Unfold the paper once more.

    • 2

Fold all four corners of the square so they meet in the middle, marked clearly where the creases made in the previous step meet. Your paper should now be a smaller square shape.

    • 3

Turn the paper over so the flaps face away from you. Fold in a corner so the edge of the square lines up with the crease running from one corner of the square to the other. Repeat symmetrically so you have an elongated kite shape.

    • 4

Turn the paper over. Make sure the longest tip of the kite points toward you. Unfold and flatten both of the loose flaps on the kite's longest tip

    • 5

Turn the paper over again. Fold the longest tip up and away from you along the now visible crease so the tip of the kite closest to you touches the top of the flaps on the side of the paper facing you.

    • 6

Turn the paper over and fold the top corner tip down and toward you, creasing from corner to corner.

    • 7

Turn the paper over and upside down. Fold the triangular flap pointing toward you up and away from you. Crease it so it makes a perfect square or diamond shape with the triangular flap underneath.

    • 8

Turn the paper over once more. Fold down and crease the biggest triangular flap so that the crease lines up with the top of the flap a little below it.

    • 9

Fold the whole thing vertically in half away from you. Pull the small triangular flap you made in the last step up so that it sticks out of the back of your sumo. Crease the flap so it stays in place.

    • 10

Let your sumo unfold slightly so that it can be stood up. You can now color your sumo your desired color.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure your creases are clean and crisp. One bad crease can ruin the whole creation.

  • Give your sumo different colors and logos to help you recognise it when pitting it against another wrestler.
