DIY Metal Bender
Bending metal is important for both practical and aesthetic purposes. Some metal, like piping, may need to be bent to aid in water or air flow. Metal is also bent in artistic sculptures or displays. Unfortunately, proper metal bending tools can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Fortunately, this cost can be avoided using simple pieces of scrap metal, a tack welder and a weight. Knowing how to create this do-it-yourself metal bender can save you time and money.
Things You'll Need
- Welder's helmet
- Gloves
- Cylindrical-shaped piece of scrap metal
- Tack welder
- 5 lb. weight
- Square piece of scrap metal
Instructions
-
-
1
Put on your protective helmet and gloves to prevent incidental eye or skin contact from the metal sparks.
-
2
Tack weld the cylindrical-shaped piece of scrap metal to your work table by turning the welder on and applying the welding tip around the piece until it is completely soldered to the table. Ensure the metal fits through the hole in the weight prior to welding it to the table.

-
3
Place a 5 lb. weight through the cylindrical-shaped piece of scrap metal.
-
4
Position the square piece of scrap metal directly across from the weight and tack weld it to the table in the same manner that the round piece of scrap metal was secured into place. The amount of space between the square piece and weight should correspond with the width of the piece of metal you seek to bend.
