How to Become a Debutante in Texas
Debutante balls originated as a coming-of-age ritual, in which wealthy, upper-class young women looking for husbands were presented to society. But in Texas, you can take part in a debutante ball, or make your debut, without having come from a wealthy or well-known family. However, it's not as simple as signing up to participate. Rather, preparation for the occasion begins many months in advance as you learn some of what it means to be a "lady."

Look for local clubs and organizations that host debutante balls or sponsor participants. Churches, social or country clubs, sorority chapters and some businesses help make the ceremony a reality for young women each year. Do plenty of research to make sure your own values and beliefs are in line with those of any organizations you approach. Most likely, you'll have to be chosen from a number of applicants, so it helps if you have some sort of interest in the organization's mission. In Texas, the Cosmopolitan Social Club, sorority chapters on campus universities across the state, and the Mid-Texas Symphony Organization are examples of groups that support debutantes.

Adjust your schedule so that you'll have time for debutante training. The ceremony requires knowing the etiquette of a poised young lady, so you'll have to learn how to walk, talk and eat "properly." The "Texas Dip," which is a more dramatic version of a curtsy, will also be part of your training. And, depending on the organization's requirements, you'll have to complete community service hours or a project that demonstrates you're ready for adulthood.

Start saving money as soon as you think about participating. Even if your family can afford to cover costs, your own contributions will indicate to a potential sponsor that you're a responsible young woman. In Texas, anyone 16 years of age or older can legally work any number of hours each week. So if you have trouble earning enough money to help out, consider a part-time job that fits your busy schedule.

Agree to accept the hand of a male escort if one is assigned to you. His role is to accompany you as you're presented to your peers, family and the rest of society. If you have to select your own escort, make sure you pick someone who'll be able to attend formal dance training with you and will support you on the big day. In Texas, you should have no problem locating a young southern gentleman who will assist you whenever possible, display manners at all times, and demonstrate chivalry as you make your debut. Some young women choose their brothers or cousins because they're sure to follow through.
