How to Recycle a Sweater Skirt

How to Recycle a Sweater Skirt thumbnail
Reuse your favorite sweater again and again.

Sweater skirts are skirts made from old sweaters and they're a stylish and practical way of reusing your favorite cold-weather top. When the skirt becomes too worn to wear, reuse the less-worn fabric pieces of the skirt to make assorted crafts, such as business card or coupon holders or pretty and unusual knit fabric greeting cards. Decorate your crafts with other recycled items like old buttons and beads or ribbon.

Instructions

  1. Coupon/Business Card Holder

    • 1

Cut out a section from the skirt that is about 4 1/2 inches long and wide.

    • 2

Cut out two more sections from the skirt that are about 4 inches long and 2 inches wide. Apply hot glue to the edges of the skirt sections to prevent them from unraveling. Let dry for about 5 minutes.

    • 3

Line the two smaller pieces up with the edges of the larger piece. Sew the edges together, but leave the sections facing the middle of the large piece open. Use a stitch method you are most comfortable with. The stitches will be on the larger side because you will have to stitch over the hot glue.

    • 4

Decorate the outside of your new card holder as desired -- you can sew on some sequins, buttons or beads or trim with ribbon in various colors, shapes and patterns.

    • 5

Fill the card holder with business cards, coupons or other important bits of paper.

    Fabric Greeting Card

    • 6

Cut out a piece of the sweater skirt that is about 12 inches long and 5 or 6 inches wide. Cover all edges with glitter glue to keep them from unraveling. Let dry for about 10 minutes, then fold the fabric together to make a card.

    • 7

Glue pictures, make drawings with paints or markers or write words and phrases on three pieces of cardboard that are about 4 to 5 inches long and wide. Spread glitter glue over the images if desired.

    • 8

Use hot glue to attach your cardboard pieces to the front and insides of the card. Attach other embellishments if desired, such as sequins on the front and inside of the card and faux jewels to the front of the card.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use pieces of cardboard taken from cardboard cereal boxes or cardboard using in mailings to keep the coupons and business cards from bending inside the holder.

  • Cover the outside of your card holder with glitter glue as another decorating option, or try beading safety pins and using them as decoration.

  • Use the cardholder as a wallet.
