How to Make a Fake Bubble Butt

How to Make a Fake Bubble Butt thumbnail
In French, "papier-mache" literally means "chewed paper."

Papier-mache is an inexpensive way to create props, light-weight models, and even fake bubble bums. Although the method is appropriate for nearly all skill levels, papier-mache requires a bit of advanced preparation and can be time-consuming. Start the project at least two days before you need the gluttonous gluteas. This will allow ample time for the glue solution and paint to dry.

Things You'll Need

  • Newspapers
  • Masking tape
  • White school glue
  • Old bowl or tub
  • Paint (if desired)

Instructions

    • 1

Blow up the balloons to 3/4 full and tie off the ends. They should be the same size.

    • 2
Masking tape is not very sticky, so it will be less likely to pop the balloons.

Place both balloons on the table, with the tied-off ends toward you. Gently tape the balloons together, across the tied-off ends with long pieces of masking tape. Tape the crevice of the balloons together on the top side only. Use plenty of tape to hold the balloons in place. Flip the base over, so the crevice without the tape is pointing up.

    • 3

Fill an old bowl or tub with water a little more than halfway. Squeeze white school glue into the water and stir with a paintbrush, old spoon, or your fingers until the mixture is thick and cloudy.

    • 4

Tear or cut newspaper into strips. The strips should not be more than 1 inch wide. Prepare a large pile of strips; you will need enough to cover your balloons in three to four layers of paper.

    • 5

Dredge a newspaper strip in the glue and water solution. Slide the wet strip through your fingers to ring out excess moisture.

    • 6

Place the wet strip across the prepared base. The strip should stick smoothly along the contours and curves of the balloon.

    • 7

Overlap the wet strips one by one on the base, until it is completely covered in three to four layers. Place some strips vertically and some horizontally. Make sure that all of the strips are smooth. Gently press the wet strips all the way down into the crevice between the balloons for more dramatic definition.

    • 8

Set the model on a clean sheet of newspaper to dry. Allow it to sit undisturbed for at least one day, or until completely dry to the touch.

    • 9

If desired, paint the bubbly bum with thick paint, taking care not to get the model too wet.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you live in a humid climate, allow the papier-mache even more time to dry.

  • To remove dried glue from surfaces, cover the spot with enough water to soak it and allow to sit until the glue loosens. Wipe it clean with a paper towel or napkin.

  • To make a solid model, create a base out of wadded up newspaper that has been taped together with masking tape. Papier-mache it as usual.

  • Papier-mache is messy and can stain clothes or furniture. Cover work surfaces with a plastic tablecloth or newspaper and wear old clothes.

  • Use paint and glue in a well-ventilated area.
