How to Dye Wooden Roses

Wood can be dyed with a number of regular household items such as coffee, tea and fruit juices. A simple way of dying wooden roses is by using food coloring. Food coloring is inexpensive and available in a wide range of colors that can be further altered by their level of dilution, allowing you control over the colors you can create to dye with. Pale types of woods will take on the color the best.

Instructions

    • 1

Place newspaper over your work surface to protect it from the dye. Put rubber gloves on your hands to protect your skin from the dye.

    • 2

Mix one part food coloring to five parts water in the glass bowl. This forms the wood dye. You can vary this ratio slightly to get a stronger or weaker dye color. You will need enough dye to cover the wooden roses when they are placed in the glass bowl.

    • 3

Place the wooden roses in the dye-filled glass bowl. Leave the wooden roses in the dye for five minutes. Make sure the roses are completely covered in dye.

    • 4

Lift each rose out of the dye individually. Use paper towels to dab any excess water or dye off each wooden rose.

    • 5

Allow the dyed wooden roses to dry overnight.

    • 6

Wipe each wooden rose over with a paper towel when the rose is completely dry. This will remove any powdery dye that has formed on the surface.
