How to Make Feather Headpieces for Bridesmaids

Use colorful feathers that match your wedding theme.

A feathered headpiece can add a vintage feel and beautiful accessory to any bridesmaid's hairdo when worn during a wedding. Instead of buying these headpieces from the store, create your own using some feathers and a few supplies you probably already have at home. Invite the bridesmaids to help create the hair accessories that they'll wear on your big day. Together, design the headpieces to perfectly match the wedding's color scheme and theme, as well as the wearer's individual personality.

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch a base for the headpiece on a piece of cardboard. Make this a simple shape, such as a circle, diamond or teardrop. Ensure the shape is about 4 inches long and that the barrette fixture will fit across its surface. Cut out the shape with scissors.

    • 2

Select a material to cover the base shape with. This might be a piece of fabric or colorful scrapbook paper. Flip over the material so that its wrong side (undecorated side) is facing up. Trace the base shape on the material. Enlarge the traced shape by outlining it with a 1-inch-thick border. Cut out the shape along the outermost sketched lines.

    • 3

Cover the base shape with glue from a hot glue gun. Place the material on top of the glue, ensuring that it's evenly centered. Press it firmly in place. Turn over the shape and attached material. Put dabs of glue around the perimeter of the material, which should be extending over the sides of the base. Fold the material over onto the back of the base and press it in place. Allow the glue to dry.

Decide where you want to place the feathers on the headpiece. Using a variety of feather colors and sizes, decide what formation will look best. Think about where the bridesmaid will wear the headpiece in her hair, and ensure the feathers don't sweep into her face or line of sight. If needed, cut off the tops of feathers to use only the plush part of the material and discard its pointed stem.

    • 5

Add a dab of glue to the bottom of the back of a feather. Press the feather in place on the base of the headpiece. Use a Popsicle stick to press the feather in place and to avoid burning your finger with the hot glue. Continue layering feathers onto the headpiece until the desired look is achieved. Allow the glue to dry.

    • 6

Turn over the base of the headpiece. Run a thick line of glue along the back of a metal hair barrette. Place the barrette on the center of the back of the headpiece. Allow it to dry before wearing the headpiece.

Tips & Warnings

  • Glue rhinestones, sequin and silk flowers onto the headpiece for added flair.

  • Adhere the base of the headpiece to other hair accessories, such as a plain headband.
