How to Crochet Skirts

If you already know how to crochet, then making a skirt shouldn't tax your skills. Whether you want an elegant skirt made from luxurious yarn like mohair, a traditional skirt made from wool or a playful skirt in fun acrylic colors, you can use the same pattern and just vary the yarn and type of stitch used to make a skirt.

Things You'll Need

  • Size I crochet hook
  • 1 to 2 skeins yarn of choice, amount depends on length of skirt
  • 1-inch wide elastic, length to fit waist
  • Tapestry needle
  • Sewing needle
  • Thread

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your waist and chain enough stitches to equal your waist measurement plus 4 inches. If you want the skirt to have more room in the hips, add 6 inches rather than 4.

    • 2

Turn the work and single crochet in each chain stitch to the end of the row. Chain 1, turn the work and repeat for a total of five rows.

    • 3

Repeat Step 2 until you have a rectangle as long as you want the skirt to be, with the long sides making the waist and hem.

    • 4

Use a tapestry needle with yarn to match the skirt. Sew the short ends together to make a smooth back seam.

    • 5

Attach elastic to the skirt using a sewing needle and thread. First, sew the elastic in a circle to fit your waist. Tack onto the skirt in four places -- front, back and both sides -- and try on the skirt. If everything fits well, finish sewing the elastic onto the skirt.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are using a different yarn and want to try a lacy stitch for elegance or whimsy, at the end of row five, chain three stitches and double crochet in the first chain stitch, chain one, skip next chain, and double crochet in the next chain stitch. Repeat to the end of the row and for as many rows as desired.
