How to Make Hijab Scarves

How to Make Hijab Scarves thumbnail
Many women own a multitude of hijabs in a variety of colors.

When you wear a hijab and want to own an assortment of them to match a variety of outfits, it can get expensive to purchase as many as you may need. Rather than shelling out big bucks to retail establishments, you can make your own hijabs at home. By purchasing lengths of material and implementing the most basic sewing skills, your hijab wardrobe is limited only by your imagination.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a rectangular piece of material that is approximately 28-inches wide and 60-inches long. Opt for plain material, and decorate it as you please with fabric paint, or select material with a pattern already printed or woven onto it.

    • 2

Fold the raw edges of the material over 1/4-inch on each side, and press with an iron to create a sharp seam. Secure your edge with straight pins.

    • 3

Use matching or contrasting thread, depending on the look you're going for, to hand stitch a hem around all four edges of your hijab. This creates a nice finish and prevents your material from unraveling.

    • 4

Embellish your hijabs -- homemade or store bought -- by sewing a delicate length of lace or piping in a contrasting color along one or more of its edges. Add a length of silky fringe to the ends, and allow it to drape attractively across your shoulders. Sew a beaded pattern or embroider an intricate pattern onto a plain hijab to add interest and texture.

    • 5

Store the hijabs you've worked hard to create on a multi-sectioned hangar to keep them in top shape and ready to wear at a moment's notice. Opt for a hanger that consists of numerous conjoined circles; one that features several small clips across its base; or a vertical hanger that offers several horizontal rods in a ladder-like style.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a sewing machine instead of hand stitching your hem, if you're unable to create even, uniform stitches by hand.

  • Use the money you save by making your own hijabs to add to your hijab pin collection.
