How to Attach an Image to Navigation in Dreamweaver CS5

Hyperlinks allow you to create navigable elements to your Web page. You can use text or images with these links, depending on your needs. While text links offer simplicity and easy editing, images take on a more creative, graphic role. In Dreamweaver CS5, you need to first add the image to your Web page, and then format it with a navigable hyperlink.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your Web page in Dreamweaver CS5.

    • 2

Click the location where you want the image to appear.

    • 3

Click "Insert" in the top menu and select "Image." Alternatively, hold the "Ctrl" and "Alt" keys down and press "I."

    • 4

Locate the image in the navigational window and click "OK." In the resulting window, you can specify "Alternate Text," which appears if images are disabled. Click "OK" again.

    • 5

Click the image and type the full URL you wish to use for navigation in the "Link" field of the Properties window. If you cannot see the Properties window, hold the "Ctrl" key and press "F3."

As an example, you might enter "http://www.somedomain.com/index.html" as the linking URL. You can also use relative links, which link to locations relative to the current page's. As an example of a relative link, you could enter just "secondpage.html" if the page resides in the same directory as the current page.

Save the page, and upload the updated page and image to your server to make it active.
