Instructions

    • 1

Insert the clipper attachment of the desired length into the clippers.

    • 2

Sit the boy down on the stool and drape the cape around his shoulders.

    • 3

Turn the clippers on momentarily so the boy can hear the sound it makes. This may help ease any fears and apprehension, especially if this is a first haircut. Turn the clippers off again until you are ready to begin cutting.

    • 4

Tip the boy's head forward slightly and hold the clippers gently at the back of his neck so the teeth of the attachment point up into the hair. Rest the clippers lightly against the back of the neck.

    • 5

Turn the clippers on and move the clippers slowly through the hair. The clippers will cut as you move it against the direction the hair grows. Continue pressing the clippers lightly and moving it up along the back of the boy's head. Stop the clippers when you reach the crown -- the point where the top of the head curves into the back of the head.

    • 6

Cut the entire bottom back edge of the boy's hair with the clippers, stopping at the same point at the crown.

    • 7

Continue to cut the hair at the same length around both ears. Fold down the ears gently with your fingers so you can see clearly to cut the hair behind the ears. Cut the sideburn areas in front of the ears also, stopping the clippers at the parietal ridge -- about three fingers above the ears -- on both sides of the head.

    • 8

Switch the clipper attachment to a slightly longer length -- 3/4 or 1 inch perhaps. Position the clippers just under the point where you stopped cutting with the shorter attachment. Pass the clippers over the hair on the top of the head. Switch the direction of the clippers to cut the top hair thoroughly -- cut it from the sides, up the back and then straight back from the front also. Continue cutting the top hair until you make it all the same length. Set the clippers aside.

    • 9

Use the scissors to make the "sideburns" even. Clip straight across to cut the sideburns about 1/2 inch below the tops of the ears. Make both sideburns even.

    • 10

Make the bottom edge of the hairline along the side and back edges neat by trimming any stray hairs with the scissors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Start with clean and dry hair, for best results. Dirty or damp hair may stick together, which could result in pulled hair while you cut or uneven results.

  • Select the cutting length you desire for the sides and back of the boy's hair -- 1/4, 3/8 or 1/2 inch would all be suitable lengths for cutting over the ears, around the sides and the back of the head.

  • Work as quickly as you can to cut the hair, especially for very young boys. Enlist the help of someone who can help distract the boy with a storybook or small toys while you cut.

  • Choose a haircutting time when the boy is not hungry or tired for the best chances of cooperation.
