How Do I Tell if Something Is Crystal or Rhinestone?

Rhinestones do not shine as much as crystals.

Crystals and rhinestones look like gemstones, but are available at more affordable prices. They are used in jewelry and as decorative elements for clothing, shoes, bridal gowns and other fashion items. When you purchase a new item containing crystals or rhinestones, the product's description usually specifies which type of stone was used. If you are purchasing a used item from an individual or consignment sale, however, you may have to inspect the item to determine the type of stone.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for symmetry and geometric shapes inside the stone. Crystals are arranged geometrically, typically in symmetrical patterns, while rhinestones are not. Rhinestones, however, might be cut in a faceted pattern, which provides a three-dimensional geometric pattern on the stone's exterior.

    • 2

Hold the item up to the light. If it reflects multiple colors similar to a rainbow, it is crystal. If it does not, it is an acrylic or glass rhinestone.

    • 3

Pick up the item. If it is heavy, it might be crystal. If it is not, it might be rhinestone. The weight depends on how much lead is in the crystal; crystals with low lead content might not feel heavier than other items. Additionally, the materials surrounding the crystal or rhinestone, such as metals and plastics, might make it difficult to figure out the weight of the stones.

    • 4

Look at the stone's backing. If there is no backing, it is crystal. If there is a foil or metallic backing, it is rhinestone. The backing gives rhinestones their sparkle and acts as a reflective mirror.

    • 5

Compare the item's cost to similar items that you know are made from rhinestones or crystals. If the item's regular price is lower than similar items made from crystal, it most likely contains rhinestones. To determine if an item is similar, find out what it is made of and how many stones it contains.
