How to Make a Origami Heart With a Star in the Middle

There are countless patterns to embrace in the world of origami. They include animals, objects, plants and shapes of every kind. Hearts are one of the most common types of origami shapes to fold for beginners. They range from the basic heart to heart-shaped envelopes and twin hearts. Origami "star in heart" shapes are one of the many ways to create an origami heart. They are even ornate enough to be used on the faces of cards or as small gifts.

Instructions

    • 1

Rotate the paper so that the shorter edges lie from left to right.

    • 2

Fold the paper in half, parallel to the short edges. Unfold.

    • 3

Fold the paper in half, parallel to the long edges. Unfold.

    • 4

There will be two large squares formed by the crease in Step 1. Create a mountain fold along the center of both squares, parallel to the shorter edges.

    • 5

Make diagonal valley folds in both squares, from left to right and right to left.

    • 6

Grasp the left edge and fold it toward the center, allowing it to collapse into a triangle. Repeat on the right side. You should be left with a diamond shape with an open middle.

    • 7

Fold down the top flap at the back of the diamond.

    • 8

Grasp the top left flap and fold it downward so that its corner aligns with the left corner of the diamond. Unfold. Fold the tip of the flap down to meet the crease you just made.

    • 9

Open up the small triangle flap created in Step 8 and press it down flat to create a square.

    • 10

Fold the top-right and bottom-left corners inward to meet the center diagonal of the small square. This should create a kite shape.

    • 11

Fold the left flap of the kite shape downward to meet the edge of the kite. Repeat with the right flap.

    • 12

Open the kite flaps and press down at the top to create a petal fold.

    • 13

Repeat Steps 8 through 12 with the other three corner flaps of the diamond.

    • 14

Fold the left and right edges of the heart back slightly to make your shape more rounded.
