How to Make a Man's Thinning Hair Look Thicker

Thin hair can look thicker with a few tricks.

Thinning hair can be as big an issue for men as it is for women. Men with thinning hair often feel older, and see their hair loss as the first sign of male-pattern baldness. While reversing the thinning process is difficult to do, there are a few things you can do to offset it. There are many products and treatments designed specifically to help thicken a man's thinning hair.

1. Ask your hairstylist for a haircut that makes your hair appear thicker. Shorter cuts with lots of layers, such as the textured crop, make hair look thicker by grouping thinning hair close together. This doesn't actually do anything to make hair thicker, but it often creates a convincing appearance of thickness.

2. Purchase a hair shampoo that increases volume. Volumizing shampoos put protein into your hair to make it look and feel thicker. Some brands even make volume shampoo that is specially optimized to thicken hair by expanding follicles at the root.

3. Experiment with hair color and home dyes. Coloring hair adds a bit of density to each follicle, and is also a way to detract attention from thinning areas. Color is more a distraction than anything, but is effective for many men.

4. Use hair-thickening shampoos and products such as Rogaine to thicken your existing hair and to promote new hair growth. Thickening shampoos often contain topical medical compounds that begin working on the scalp to regenerate hair growth. Research any thickening product carefully before purchasing to determine any side effects, as well as to ensure that the product you have in mind is designed specifically for men.

5. Talk to your doctor about a micro-hair transplant. A micro-hair transplant is a surgical procedure involving the removal of a small piece of scalp from the rear of the head where hair growth is thickest. The section removed is then dissected into 1,000 or more small sections, each containing one to three hairs, which is then grafted back onto the front of the head. The procedure can take a bit of time, usually leaves a permanent scar, and is often very costly.
