How to Give a Photo a Glamour Shot Look

Fashion glamour photos are created with a soft, dream-like glow that enhances the facial features of the model and removes imperfections in the skin. This effect can be simulated in a digital imaging program with just about any photo using filters and layering effects. By digitally simulating the actual process in post production, you will save a great deal of time. After the editing process is complete, the revised photo will have richer, warmer tones.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your photo in a digital imaging program. Make sure the photo's color mode is set to RGB by navigating to the program's "Image" menu near the top of the screen and selecting the "Mode" menu.

    • 2

Rename the current "Background" layer to "Normal Photo."

    • 3

Right-click the current "Normal Photo" layer in the program's "Layers" panel and select the "Duplicate" option from the pop-up menu.

    • 4

Rename the duplicated layer to "Blur" by double-clicking it in the "Layers" panel.

    • 5

Click the "Blur" layer. Open the program's "Filters" menu and select "Blur," then "Gaussian Blur" from the list. Once the "Gaussian Blur" menu appears, click the "Preview" check box to make your changes visible, then adjust the "Radius" modifier until the photo is slightly blurred. A setting of three to five pixels is sufficient.

    • 6

Set the Layer Mode of the "Blur" layer to Overlay in the "Layers" panel using the drop-down menu near the top of the panel.

    • 7

Save the photo when you are finished editing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experiment with the program's "Brightness/Contrast" options to make the shadows and highlights of your photo more vivid and dramatic.

  • Use the program's Crop tool to adjust the focus of your original photo. This will allow you to remove unnecessary background items and to bring out the subject's facial features.

  • The Dodge and Burn tools work well for enhancing the shine and texture of jewelry. They are also useful for adding a sense of drama to the subject's eyes and lips.

  • Alter the subject's hair color by selecting it with the Lasso tool and using the program's "Hue/Saturation" modifiers to adjust the hue, color intensity and brightness.

  • Save your image frequently while working to avoid losing your changes in the event of a program crash or power outage.

  • Make sure that you are working on the correct layer when making edits to your photo.

  • When saving your finished glamour photo, make sure to save it as a separate file from the original, unedited photo.
