How to Troubleshoot a SonicWall NSA-2400

The SonicWALL NSA-2400 is a network security appliance that keeps hackers and viruses off of servers. If you are having problems with your SonicWALL NSA-2400, you can use the diagnostic software to fix the problem. The SonicWALL NSA-2400 comes with Packet Capture, Ping, Active Connections Monitor and a Log Viewer. You can use each of these to diagnose the problems with your unit before taking it into a shop for repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the connections on the front of the NSA-2400. The front six Ethernet ports are used for your computers or network devices. The console port is used to connect to the cable modem or other Internet devices.

    • 2

Press the "Reset" button to completely reset your SonicWALL. Once this is enabled, you will need to reconfigure the settings using the control panel in your SonicWALL software.

    • 3

Check the fans on the back of the unit. There are three fans on the back of the NSA-2400. If the fans aren't running, the system will overheat. Send the unit back for servicing if the fans are not working properly.

    • 4

Check the power cord on the back of the unit. Make sure that the unit's power button is turned to the "On" position. If you find any frays or tears in the power cord, replace the cord immediately.

    • 5

Open the SonicWALL software on your computer and then click the "System" icon. Click the "Packet Capture" icon, then click the "Configure" icon to configure the ports on the system. Click "Start" to capture the packets running through the NSA-2400. Check the packets for drops from the "Sent" and "Received" prompts. You should be receiving the same number of packets that you're sending out. Contact your service provider if you are not getting all of your packets.

    • 6

Click the "System" icon and then click the "Diagnostics" icon. Click the "Active Connections Monitor" icon to see all of the devices connected to the system. If there are devices connected to the NSA-2400 you do not recognize, click the "Flush" button on the right side of the screen to disconnect the device.

    • 7

Ping your network using the "Ping" option from the "Diagnostics" page. Enter your IP address into the field and press the "GO" button to ping your network. If the ping does not go through, check your network connections.

    • 8

Open the "Log Viewer" from the "Log" option on the software. Click "View" to open your log. Review the log for any problems. If you are not familiar with the log, print it out and take it to a network professional to see if there are any problems.
