How to Troubleshoot a Danco Universal Tub Spout

How to Troubleshoot a Danco Universal Tub Spout thumbnail
Replace tub spouts that have low-pressure flow to both the spout and shower head at the same time.

Universal tub spouts have a diverter valve in them that eventually can break. The diverter valve's function is to close an internal piece that blocks the flow of water to the tub spout. The water can then only travel up to the shower head and exit there for a shower. When a diverter valve fails, the water will not travel to the shower head or it will supply both the shower head and spout with a weak stream of water. This requires a replacement spout. If your Danco tub spout leaks around the base next to the wall, the tub spout needs to be replaced. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Slip-On Type

    • 1

Insert an Allen wrench into the set screw at the rear underneath the spout. Turn the Allen wrench counterclockwise until the set screw is loose.

    • 2

Grasp the tub spout with adjustable pliers and pull it straight off. Measure the length of the copper pipe from the tub wall to the protruding end. Take the tub spout to a hardware or plumbing store and purchase a new one that is made of a copper stub-out in the same length.

    • 3

Sand the threads of the copper pipe to remove any corrosion or mineral buildup. The pipe is thoroughly sanded when it is very shiny.

    • 4

Slip the new tub spout onto the copper stub-out and push it snuggly against the bathtub wall. Insert the set screw in the rear-bottom hole of the spout. Insert an Allen wrench into the set screw and tighten it clockwise while holding the spout opening steady. Ensure it is pointing straight downward.

    Screw-On Type

    • 5

Place a large flathead screwdriver into the spout opening. Turn the screwdriver counterclockwise to loosen the spout. Continue turning the spout counterclockwise until it comes off the plumbing pipes in the wall.

    • 6

Measure the steel or plastic bushing that protrudes from the tub wall from the wall to the tip. Take your old spout to a hardware or plumbing store and purchase the same type with the same length of stub-out.

    • 7

Sand the threads on a steel pipe to remove any corrosion or mineral buildup.

    • 8

Wrap three revolutions of plumber's tape clockwise around the threads of a steel pipe.

    • 9

Place the tub spout on the stub-out and turn it clockwise as far as you can. Place a towel over the tub spout and insert the flathead screwdriver into the spout opening. Turn the screwdriver clockwise until the spout is tight and the opening faces straight downward. Remove the towel from the spout.

Tips & Warnings

  • Installing a screw-on type spout with a towel over it protects the finish from scratches if the screwdriver slips.

  • You can also add a bead of silicone caulk around the spout where it meets the wall for an additional sealant.
