How to Knit a Doll Skirt
One of the best things about playing with a doll is being able to change her wardrobe. Avoid purchasing expensive commercially made doll clothing and instead knit a custom doll skirt. Knitting a skirt is a great project for a beginner because the skirt can be knitted flat using simple knitting stitches and seamed. This pattern fits a doll with an 11-inch waist, but you can adjust the waist size or length of the knitted skirt to fit a variety of dolls.
Things You'll Need

- Knitting needles, size 3
- Tapestry needle
Instructions

1
Cast on 64 stitches with the main color.
-
2
Make 1/2 inch of knit-one-purl-one ribbing. To make K1P1 ribbing, knit the first stitch and purl the next stitch. Alternate knit and purl stitches across the row. On the wrong side of the work, purl the first stitch and knit the second stitch. Alternate purl and knit stitches across the row. End with a wrong side row.

-
3
Knit 1 inch of stockinette stitch in the main color. To make stockinette stitch, knit all the stitches on the right side rows and purl all the stitches on the wrong side rows.
-
4
Switch colors and make 1 inch of stockinette stitch in contrasting yarn.
-
5
Alternate 1 inch of the main color with 1 inch of contrast color until the skirt is about 3/4 inch shorter than the desired finished length.
-
6
Switch to the main color if you just finished a contrast row, or continue knitting with the main color if your previous row was in the main color. Knit 3/4 inch of K1 P1 ribbing.
-
7
Bind off all the stitches loosely. Cut the yarn about 18 inches from the work and draw the tail through the final loop.
-
8
Roll the fabric into a tube resembling a skirt, matching up the waist edges and the bottom edges. Thread the tail yarn onto a tapestry needle and close the seam using an overcast stitch. Weave in any remaining loose ends.
-
9
Add blanket stitch to the bottom edge using contrast color if desired. Thread the needle with the contrast yarn and anchor the end under several stitches along the bottom of the skirt. Bring the yarn under the bottom edge of the skirt and insert the needle into the front of the skirt one row up from the bottom. Pull the yarn through to the back and then insert the needle from back to front between the bottom edge of the skirt and the loop of yarn created by the previous stitch. Insert the needle into the next stitch to the right on the front of the skirt, one row up from the bottom. Draw the yarn through to the back and then insert the needle from back to front between the bottom edge of the skirt and the yarn loop from the previous stitch. Continue this pattern along the entire bottom of the skirt. Cut the yarn and weave in the loose end.

Tips & Warnings
For smaller dolls, use fingering weight yarn for a lighter finished skirt. Use worsted weight yarn for a larger doll.
Stop the seam about 1 inch short of the top of the waist and add a button if you want a waist that can open and close. Or thread a length of yarn onto a tapestry needle and weave it in and out of the stitches along the top row to create a drawstring if you want to be able to tighten the skirt.
