How to Keep From Chafing When Running

How to Keep From Chafing When Running thumbnail
Running is a popular exercise for those seeking cardiovascular health.

Runners often deal with the annoying problem of chafing around the area of the inner thighs. Chafing is usually the result of skin that has been irritated by heat, friction and moisture. Left untreated, chafing also can evolve into a fungal infection known as jock itch. You can prevent chafing while running by protecting your skin during the repetitive movements involved in this type of exercise.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear clothing that fits properly. If your clothing is moving back and forth across your skin as you run, you will probably experience chaffing. Many runners wear compression shorts, which form to the body and offers added groin support for male runners.

    • 2

Wear clothing made of natural fibers or fibers designed to "wick" moisture from your skin. Some synthetic fibers don't "breathe" well, which causes moisture to build up under your clothing.

    • 3

Apply an anti-chafing product (usually in the form of a stick, much like a deodorant) to your inner thighs prior to running.

    • 4

Run short distances at first to give your skin time to get accustomed to the running routine. Taking long runs right away makes you more susceptible to chafing.

    • 5

Remove sweaty clothes immediately after a run. Shower and pat your thighs completely dry before dressing.
