How to Make a Drink Coaster From a CD

Use extra CDs in a practical manner by making them into coasters.

You may have old CDs lying around from old software programs or may even have CDs that no longer work. Instead of throwing out the CDs, create something with them. Re-use old and unusable CDs by creating art or even using them in a practical manner. Make coasters out of the CDs with just a few extra items. The CDs are already round and larger than most glass bottoms, water bottles and soda cans .

Things You'll Need

• CD
• Felt
• Markers
• Scissors
• Craft or fabric glue
• Waterproof sealant

Instructions

CD Prep

1. Place the CD on the felt and trace it with a pen or marker.

2. Cut out the piece of felt along the line you traced. This will give you a piece of felt that is the size of the CD. If you want it smaller, cut it accordingly.

3. Glue the piece of felt to the non-shiny side of the CD. This will help the CD from scratching the surface you put the coaster on. It will also cover up the hole in the middle of the CD.

4. Let the glue dry according to the package directions.

Decorating Ideas

1. Draw designs onto the CDs with markers made for marking CDs. This will give your coasters a pop of color. Experiment with different geometric designs and patterns that match the decor of your house.

2. Glue a personal photo to the top of the CD with the craft glue. Cover the glue with a waterproof sealant so that you are able to use it as a coaster.

3. Create a collage and glue the images to the CD with craft glue. Then apply the sealant to make the coaster waterproof.

Tips & Warnings

• Glue two CDs together to make a stronger coaster.

• If your CDs are broken or cracked, throw them away. When CDs break, they become sharp and could cause an injury.
