How to Cut a Wall for a Bookcase
An inset or recessed bookcase is set into the wall so it has a streamlined feel in the room and doesn't take up valuable floor space. To make a recessed bookcase, you need to cut out a section of the wall so you can install the bookcase in the wall with the front of the bookcase level with the wall. Cutting out the wall should be done between wall studs so you don't compromise the structural integrity of the wall. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Locate a pair of wall studs in the wall where you want to cut the bookcase recess, using a stud finder.
-
2
Mark the inside edge of the wall studs with a pencil in lines the height of the bookcase, and draw two horizontal lines at the top and bottom of the wall stud lines to delineate where you will cut the wall for the bookcase.

3
Cut a spy hole in the center of the cutting area, using a wallboard saw. Hold the saw at an angle as you're cutting so the cutout falls outward. Look through the spy hole so you can see if there are any wires or pipes you need to be aware of when cutting out the wall.

4
Cut along the lines you made earlier for the bookcase, using the wallboard saw. Hold a straightedge along the lines to make sure they are straight. Pop out the cut-away portion of the wall, and you are ready to install the bookcase.
