How to Find the Multiplication and Proportion Using a Rectangle
In your math classes, you will frequently have to carry out arithmetic operations, such as multiplication. When you are first learning how to carry out such operations, they can seem daunting. Methods, such as using a rectangle to multiply two quantities together, can be of great use. When using a rectangle, it is crucial to construct a rectangle of the proper proportions. You will either need to use a ruler to create multiple blocks of space in the rectangle or you will need actual blocks with which to construct the rectangle.

1
Determine the proportions of your rectangle, depending on the numbers you want to multiply. For instance, if you want to multiply 5 by 4, you will need a 5 by 4 rectangle.
-
2
Create your rectangle, according to the dimensions in Step 1. For instance, your rectangle should be five blocks across and four blocks down. Fill in the space between blocks, until you have a complete 5 by 4 shape.

3
Count the total number of blocks in your rectangle. If you have a 5 by 4 rectangle, the total number of blocks in your rectangle will be 20. Thus, the multiplication of 5 and 4 yields 20, as an answer.
