How to Do Corners When Tying Fringe Pillows

Tied fringe pillows are constructed of fleece fabric cut and tied around a pillow form. All four sides of two squares of fabric are cut into a deep fringe and the fringe pieces of each side are tied together to form the front and back of the pillow. All those knots and fringe strings can get a bit crowded when you come to a corner on the pillow design. Use some creative cutting to make a smooth corner without buckling or bunching.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two squares of fleece fabric the desired size of your finished pillow, including the outside fringes, plus 1 inch per fringe. If you want a 20-inch pillow with 4-inch fringe, cut two squares that measure 30 inches across. This will give you a 20-inch center surrounded by 1-inch knots and 4-inch fringes on every side.

    • 2

Lay one square of fabric on the work surface in front of you. Measure along the bottom edge to a point 5 inches from the bottom right corner. Snip the fabric at this point to mark it. Measure along the bottom edge 5 inches from the bottom, left corner and snip the fabric to mark this point.

    • 3

Turn the fabric on the table 90 degrees so that the edge you snipped twice is on the left. Measure and snip the new edge on the bottom in the same manner. Turn the fabric, measure and snip, continuing in this way until you have made two cuts in each fabric edge.

    • 4

Cut upward into the fabric from the bottom edge at each point you snipped. Make each cut 5 inches long. Each cut will meet an adjacent cut on an edge around the corner. This will remove a 5-inch square from every corner of the fabric squares.

    • 5

Lay the fabric on the work surface in front of you. Make a series of 5-inch cuts from the bottom edge up toward the center of the fabric. Each cut should be 1/2-inch from the last. This will create a fringe on each side of the square.

    • 6

Place the pillow form on top of one fabric piece and cover it with the other one. Tie each corresponding pair of fringe pieces, top and bottom together, with a square knot.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want a larger or smaller fringe than 4 inches, use your desired fringe length plus 1 inch instead of "5 inches" in all the above directions.
