How to Close Trim a Beard

How to Close Trim a Beard thumbnail
Always use a sharp, rust-free razor for shaving.

A well-maintained close-trimmed beard gives a man a distinguished look and can compliment his facial features when done properly. When shopping for tools, look for a pair of barber's scissors instead of multipurpose grooming scissors for a precise cut. Evaluate electric trimmers before you make a purchase, and use a magnifying mirror when you trim and shave so you don't miss the small details. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Shampoo your beard thoroughly and rinse.

    • 2

Pat your beard dry, or allow it to air dry. If you trim your beard when it's wet, it may seem shorter when dry.

    • 3

Comb through your beard. Starting where your hair begins at one ear, slowly comb through, and snip off the excess hair above the comb's teeth. Remove only a bit at a time if you're new to trimming. Move to the opposite side, and repeat the step, checking often for an even trim.

    • 4

Continue trimming toward the center of your beard until you have an even trim. Inspect closely for stray hairs, and snip them using the comb and scissors.

    • 5

Run a beard trimmer over your beard if you don't want to snip it with scissors. Set the guard for a close trim per manufacturer's instructions.

    • 6

Trim your moustache. Comb your moustache in the direction the hair grows so that it smooths out as much as possible. Glide the beard trimmer over one side of your mouth in the direction the hair grows. Hold the comb, and cut the hair above it with your scissors, as you did your beard, working from the center of your mouth out at a diagonal, following the direction of hair growth. Repeat on the opposite side.

Pat your face clean, and brush off excess hair.
