Send text messages on restricted phones using your email account.

One of the most convenient features of using cell phones is the ability to send and receive text messages. Text messages are sent through the phone's "Short Message Service," also known as SMS. Companies often offer their employees restricted phones that do not include text message service. Therefore, you cannot use the text messaging feature on the device. However, you can still send text messages to other people using your personal email account. You merely need to know the recipient's mobile provider.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask the text message recipient which mobile provider they use for cell phone service.

    • 2

Look up the email address used to send SMS messages to recipients (see Resources). For example, to send an SMS message to an AT&T user, the email address must be formatted as "10digitphonenumber@txt.att.net."

    • 3

Open your device's web browser. Windows mobile users should select the "Internet Explorer" icon from the device's home screen. BlackBerry and Droid users should select the "Browser" icon from the home screen.

    • 4

Browse to your personal email account. For example, you may have an account with Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo!Mail. Enter your account's username and password. Click "Compose" or "New" to start a new message.

    • 5

Enter the SMS email address into the "To:" field, along with a subject in the field labeled "Subject." Type your text message in the email body. Press "Send" to transmit the message to the intended recipient.
