Reuse a soda can by creating a pin cushion.

Pin cushions are useful tools for those who enjoy crafts like sewing and cross-stitching, preventing pins and needles from getting lost and providing an easy method of access. When you make your own pin cushion, you can customize it with the fabric patterns and colors of your choice. Using a soda can for the base of your pin cushion makes it an eco-friendly craft.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a craft knife to make a starter hole in the side of the soda can, approximately one-third of the way up from the bottom. Stick scissors through the hole and cut around the circumference, removing the top two-thirds of the can. Discard the top section. Rinse out the soda can bottom thoroughly to remove any sticky residue left behind from the drink.

    • 2

Turn the can bottom so it faces upright and place it onto a piece of cardboard. Trace around the bottom of the can with a pencil. Cut out the circle and test to see if it fits easily into the soda can bottom. Trim until it does if necessary.

    • 3

Use a compass to draw a circle with a diameter of 6 inches onto a piece of fabric. Cut out the fabric circle and turn it upside down.

    • 4

Place the cardboard circle in the center of the upside-down fabric circle. Fold one side of the circle over so it just touches the edge of the cardboard circle and glue into place with a hot glue gun. Repeat the folding and gluing process on three additional points, leaving openings. Allow the glue time to dry for at least an hour.

    • 5

Stuff the pin cushion top by sticking cotton batting through the holes. Fill until completely stuffed and glue the holes shut.

    • 6

Create a border for the soda can bottom by cutting a piece of fabric that fits around its circumference. Glue the fabric piece around the edge of the can and trim away any excess. Add any decorative embellishments like small plastic charms or tiny ribbons if desired.

    • 7

Cover the cardboard circle with hot glue and stick the top portion of the pin cushion into the bottom of the soda can. Let the glue dry overnight before using.
