How to Crochet a Basic Dog Sweater for a Miniature Schnauzer

This miniature schnauzer is begging for a comfortable, crocheted sweater.

Miniature schnauzers are loving, attentive and smart dogs. They are also highly attractive. What miniature schnauzer would not love a homemade sweater to ward off cold days? Dog sweaters, especially for smaller dogs, are great crochet projects for beginners. A basic sweater for the miniature schnauzer is an easy project because the neck is not fitted and no sleeves are set. Making the sweater for an individual schnauzer allows the crocheter to pick a yarn that especially suits the dog in terms of weight and color.

Things You'll Need

• Measuring tape
• Crochet hook
• Yarn

Instructions

1. Measure your miniature schnauzer. The sweater follows its neck to waist measurement.

2. Chain 70 stitches. Create the round by joining with a slip stitch. Chain two stitches and half double crochet in the chain and in each successive chain. Join each chain with a slip stitch until you have completed the first round. Do not turn when completing the round.

3. Half double crochet in the next step and in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch at the beginning of chain two. Repeat until you have created rounds two through 12. Do not turn your work at any point.

4. Slip stitch the next 20 stitches to begin round 13. Chain two and then half double crochet the next 39 stitches. Chain two more stitches and then turn.

5. Half double crochet each stitch in the row. Chain two stitches, turn and repeat for three more rows. If the dog is smaller or larger than average, take away or add more of these rows.

6. Chain 16 stitches and half double crochet the same number of stitches. Slip stitch to the opposite side of the row just finished, completing round 17.

7. Half double crochet each stitch and chain around. Join with a slip stitch on the second chain. Complete row 18 and repeat for two more rows.

8. Weave in all yarn ends. Check for fit by trying the sweater on your miniature schnauzer.
