How to Make the Joker's Knife Shoes

In the 2008 Batman film "The Dark Knight," the Joker wears boots equipped with steel knife blades that extend from the toe of each boot. It would be extremely dangerous to use real blades for a Joker costume. However, you can easily add imitation blades to your Joker boots for your next Halloween or costume party.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw two 1-by-3-inch rectangles on a piece of thick cardboard. Use a ruler to mark one short end of each rectangle at the half-inch point. Make the marked end of each rectangle curve to a sharp point at its apex (i.e., the half-inch mark). The completed shapes should resemble a knife blade (see the photo in Resources).

    • 2

Cut out the cardboard knife blades with the scissors. Take the cardboard blades outside. Paint the blades with silver metallic spray paint. Allow one hour for the paint to dry before proceeding.

    • 3

Wrap the top 2 inches of the blades -- including the sharp ends -- in aluminum foil to made them shinier. (The paint applied in the previous step acts as a safety coat. If the foil comes off, the blades will still look metallic.)

    • 4

Put on a pair of work gloves. Use the straight-edge knife to cut a 1.25-inch horizontal slit in the front of each boot, where the leather meets the sole.

    • 5

Coat the bottom inch of the blades (i.e., the ends without foil) in permanent adhesive. Slide each blade into the slit in each boot, until the foil-free inch is no longer visible. Straighten the blades if necessary. Allow the adhesive to dry for the amount of time specified on the product label.
