Troubleshooting a Mousepad
Mousepads -- also known as touch pads -- are used in laptop computers as a substitute for a regular mouse. While they are nothing like as comfortable or as easy to use, they are convenient when you are on the move. A mousepad works with the electrostatic energy in your fingers. This is why, for example, nothing happens if you try to move the mouse pointer by moving a pen or another device over the mousepad. However, if your mousepad has stopped working properly in spite of normal usage, you may want to try some of the following troubleshooting methods.

1
Ensure you are using the computer in appropriate conditions. There should be no moisture on your hands when using the mousepad, as this will adversely effect accuracy.
-
2
Clean the mousepad with a soft lint-free cloth, ideally with a small amount of rubbing alcohol on it. Make sure, however, that you do not actually get the mousepad wet.

Click the "Uninstall a program" link in the Control Panel. This is accessible by typing "Control" in the Start menu search box or clicking the link in the Start menu. Remove any mouse-related drivers and other software. While new laptops invariably come with a whole set of software and drivers for the built-in mouse, none of these are actually needed. Windows provides perfectly adequate built-in drivers. Windows will reinstall the device for you on reboot.
