How to Make an Egyptian Pharaoh Headpiece for a Kid
Before Pharaoh Menes united Egypt under one crown, what we know as ancient Egypt was divided into two kingdoms: Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. The head of each state wore distinct headgear: a white crown for Upper Egypt and a red one for Lower Egypt. Creating the two crowns is a simple task; as all you need is paper and everyday materials. In addition, when you have completed both crowns you can form the crown of united Egypt, as Menes did not create a new design, but merged the two crowns into one.
Things You'll Need
- White paper
- Red construction paper
- Yellow construction paper
- Pipe cleaner
- Sticky tape
- Paper glue
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Ruler
- Cotton balls

Lower Egypt Crown
-
1
Measure the child's head circumference using measuring tape. Form a rectangle on the red construction paper with your ruler, measuring 1/2 inch larger than the circumference in length and equal in height with your child's forehead.
-
2
Draw another rectangle, starting from the rectangle's middle point and extending upwards. Its height must be equal to the horizontal rectangle's length.
-
-
3
Cut out the design and round the corners of the horizontal rectangle with a pair of scissors. Apply the horizontal rectangle around your kid's head and mark the spot where you must glue its two ends.
-
4
Make a spiral on a 7-inch pipe cleaner's end. Stick the other end of the pipe cleaner on the inside of the vertical rectangle, between the base and the rounded top side. This way, when the kid wears the crown, the spiraled pipe cleaner will extend above his head.
-
5
Draw a small snake as you would see it from the front, measuring 3 1/2-by-1/2 inches on the yellow construction paper. Include only the head and a small part of its body. Cut it out and glue it on the bottom of the crown's front side.
Upper Egypt Crown

6
Draw two identical shapes, resembling bottles, on white paper. Both must have a straight base, curved sides and a small rounded top, measuring a third of the base's length. The base of each shape must equal half the child's head circumference.
-
7
Form a slot for the spiraled pipe cleaner in the middle of one shape and an inch lower on the other shape. You need these slots to combine the two crowns.
-
8
Use transparent sticky tape to keep the two shapes together. Carefully stuff the top of the headgear with cotton balls to give it a spherical shape. The Upper Egypt crown is now complete.
-
9
Merge the two crowns by placing the Upper Egypt crown into the Lower Egypt one, while carefully placing the spiral into the slots. Form two semi-circles on the two sides of each crown, if the kid's ears don't let the craft fit on the head.
