How to Make a Windmill With Preschoolers thumbnail
Windmills make for a fun and entertaining project for preschoolers.

Windmills work by taking the wind that travels through the blades and slowing it down to make the blades turn. The concept of a windmill and how it works is very fascinating to a preschooler. Making a windmill can include many highly involved steps, or making a windmill can simply use recyclable materials such as a toilet paper roll and a few sheets of paper. Teaching a preschooler about windmills, while subsequently making a windmill, will help reinforce the concepts that are taught.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the toilet paper roll and cover it with construction paper. Once it is covered, have the children color the toilet paper roll to look like a house with a door and a few windows. The children can either color directly on the toilet paper roll, or they can color on another piece of construction paper and cut out and glue the pieces they made onto the toilet paper roll.

    • 2

Cut four rectangular-shaped blades that are about 3 inches long and about 1 inch wide out of the construction paper. The size of the blades may look better a little longer or shorter depending on the size of the toilet paper roll.

    • 3

Glue the blades to the top of the toiler paper roll in a pinwheel shape or an x-shape. Make sure to have some of the blades showing above the top of the toilet paper roll.

Tips & Warnings

  • In order to make windmill blades that actually spin, use a tack or pin to attach them to the toilet paper roll instead of glue.
