How to Determine if You Are Addicted to the Internet
The Internet is one of the most important tools in the world: it allows us to gather information on virtually any subject, connect with others anywhere on the planet and improve our work productivity. Some people, however, find it impossible to separate themselves from the "virtual" world, which can devolve into a full-blown Internet addiction. Internet addicts -- just like those addicted to drugs or alcohol -- might not recognize their problem without help.

1
Measure the amount of time spent online. You might be addicted to the Web if you regularly lose track of time and spend hours online while personal duties like house cleaning, laundry and even work go unfinished.
-
2
Gauge your mood. Internet addicts can be hostile with anyone who questions the amount of time they spend online. You might be addicted if you feel guilty about spending time online or try to hide your online activities from your friends and family. Also, Web addicts feel a sense of euphoria when online and only feel that way when immersed in the virtual world.

3
Speak with your friends and family. Internet addicts can isolate themselves from their family and friends without realizing it. The people close to you can tell you whether or not they feel neglected because of your Web use.
-
4
List your physical symptoms. Internet addicts suffer physical effects from their extended hours online, including injuries and ailments ranging from eye strain to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome to migraine headaches.
-
5
Seek a professional evaluation. More and more licensed therapists are treating patients with online addictions. A psychologist who specializes in addiction can determine whether your behavior is an addiction and help you discover the underlying reasons for it.
