How Do I Get Nail Polish Out of a Microfiber Couch?

Nail polish that spills onto your couch requires careful removal.

Polishing your nails while sitting on the suede-like surface of your microfiber couch is one way to wind down from a busy day. But when nail polish spills on the microfiber, relaxation goes out the window. The sticky liquid slowly spreads on the upholstery, staining the surface with its colorful dye. Although a nail polish spill is messy, it can get even messier if you're not careful while cleaning it up. When you use the right supplies and methods, you can get a nail polish stain off your microfiber couch.

Things You'll Need

• Plastic spoon
• Paper towels
• Eye dropper
• Acetone-based nail polish remover
• Cotton balls
• Dry-cleaning solvent
• Bowl
• 1 tsp. dishwashing detergent
• Clean cloths

Instructions

1. Scrape spilled nail polish off the microfiber with a plastic spoon. Wipe the polish onto a paper towel. Repeat this step to remove as much nail polish from the surface as possible.

2. 

   An eye dropper places the solution directly onto the stain.

   Fill an eye dropper with acetone-based nail polish remover. Drop the solution directly onto the remaining nail polish stain, using only as much as is needed to moisten the stain. Lay a paper towel over the polish and gently press down to transfer the nail polish to the paper towel. Alternately apply nail polish remover and blot the stain to lift as much as possible.

3. Moisten a cotton ball with dry-cleaning solvent. Sponge the microfiber to remove any residual color left by the nail polish. Discard soiled cotton balls and continue with a clean one.

4. 

   Dishwashing detergent is mild enough to use on microfiber.

   Mix 1 tsp. of dishwashing detergent into 1 cup of lukewarm water in a bowl. Soak a cloth in the detergent solution then wring it out. Dab the microfiber with the detergent solution to clean the surface. Rinse the couch by blotting it with a damp cloth.

5. Lay a dry cloth over the upholstery that's been cleaned. Press against it with your hands to absorb as much moisture as possible. Allow the upholstery to air-dry.

Tips & Warnings

• Drop hydrogen peroxide onto light-colored microfiber to get rid of a color stain left by nail polish.

• If the nail polish hardens, scrape it off with the dull side of a table knife then treat the rest of the stain with nail polish remover, followed by a dishwashing detergent solution.
