How to Make a Karate Jacket
The Japanese name for the karate practice uniform is "karate gi." The material of the karate gi should be lightweight, and the fit should allow the wearer to move freely. This is because karate is a sport that involves striking and kicking your opponent. The karate jacket is an important component of the karate gi. You can fashion karate jackets at home easily. Any white fabric will work, but the sturdier the fabric is, the less likely it is to rip.

1
Choose a karate jacket pattern that the child's karate instructor approves of. Patterns are available from online auction sites and other online retailers. Purchase fabric and thread in a color that meets with the karate instructor's approval.
-
2
Measure the person who will wear the karate jacket. Measure the circumference of the wearer's chest, waist and hips. Select a pattern size that matches the wearer's measurements. Cut the two body pieces, sleeve and collar from the paper using scissors.

3
Lay the fabric on a flat surface. Use a straight pin to attach the pattern pieces to the white fabric.
-
4
Use a running stitch to connect the two body pieces.
-
5
Use pins to connect the sleeves to the body of the jacket. Use pins to close the sleeves. Use a running stitch to connect the sleeves to the body. Use a running stitch to close the underarm sleeve, and continue sewing all the way down to the hem of the jacket.
-
6
Sew a running stitch along the hem at the bottom of the jacket and the hems at the bottom of the sleeves.
-
7
Cut a piece of white fabric that is twice the length of the wearer's hip measurements. Fold the fabric over so it is 2 inches wide. Use a whipstitch to close the seams. This will form the belt of the karate jacket.
-
8
Iron the uniform and the belt so that all of the seams lie flat.
-
9
Place the karate belt around the wearer's waist, over the hipbones. Tie the belt so that the loose ends of the knot are of the same length and are directed downward.

Tips & Warnings
Consider sewing the stitches over each seam that has been sewn into the jacket twice. This will help the seams remain secure during karate training.
