How to Dress for an Immigration Interview

Choice of dress says a lot about the person being interviewed.

Credibility is just as important as the documents you're presenting during an immigration interview. The immigration official interviewing you can deny you a visa if you come across as untrustworthy. Part of your interview preparations must include your dress. There are no specific instructions on your immigration forms about what to wear, but you're better off looking like you're attending a job interview.

1. Stay away from bright colors. Wear conservative colors, including navy and dark gray. Quality wool and synthetics are good for both men and women's suits.

2. Choose a conventional tie acceptable in any business environment, if you're a man. Typically, this should be a regular silk tie on a long-sleeved shirt, regardless of the season. 5. Choose a conservative watch that someone would normally wear in an office. Avoid earrings, if you're a man. Ensure your facial hair is well-groomed, if you're wearing any. For ladies, keep your choices simple. Don't overdo your makeup. A minimal amount of makeup to give you a polished look is good enough.

Tips & Warnings

• You don't necessarily have to purchase new clothes, but your business attire should not have any stains or holes. If you're wearing old clothes, have them dry-cleaned. The idea is not only to look tidy, but responsible as well.
