How to Make a Plain Scarf for a Left Hander
Crocheting is simple to understand after completing a few projects, but it can be difficult if you are left handed. Most instructions are tailored to a right handed crocheter, but this shouldn't create a handicap. If you are left handed, learning instructions to crochet a simple scarf may seem complex, but after changing it around, you will find that it is not so complicated. With a little patience and time, any left handed crocheter can make a plain scarf.

Starting out Left Handed

1
Hold the crochet hook in your left hand as you would hold a pencil or knife. The hook end will be in front of your fingers and back end will point toward your wrist. Everyone holds the crochet hook differently. As you work, you'll find the way that is most comfortable for you.
-
2
Tie a slip knot in the end of the yarn, leaving the loop just big enough for the crochet hook to slip through. Insert the crochet hook into the loop.
-
-
3
Hold the yarn in your right hand while the crochet hook is in your left hand. Pull the strand over the top of your right index finger to control the yarn when you crochet. Wrap or weave the strand through your right middle and ring fingers to control the tension. Everyone wraps and weaves the yarn differently. You'll find the most comfortable way as you work.
-
4
Grab the yarn with the hook and pull it back through the loop of the slip knot. Keep the strand on the hook, creating another loop. Use your index finger to control the yarn as you pull it through the loop. Use your other fingers to control the tightness of the stitch.

Make a chain of 87 stitches. This will be the length of the scarf. If you desire a longer or shorter scarf, adjust the number of stitches accordingly. Count each stitch as it is created and ensure the length consists of an odd number of stitches. Turn the chain to begin the first row and work in the opposite direction.
-
6
Chain two. Count three chains from the hook. The stitch on the hook does not count. Insert the crochet hook into the third chain and create a double crochet.
-
7
Chain one. Skip over a chain, leaving it open. Insert the hook into the next chain and create a double crochet. Repeat this process until you have reached the end of the row. The first row will end with a total of 44 double crochets. Turn your scarf to work in the opposite direction.
-
8
Begin the second row by chaining two. Create a double crochet in the double crochet from the previous row.
-
9
Chain one. Skip over the next chain, leaving it open. Create a double crochet in the double crochet from the previous row. Repeat this process until you have reached the end of the second row. The second row will also end with 44 stitches. Turn the scarf.
-
10
Continue crocheting rows, adding to the width of the scarf. Create every subsequent row exactly the same as the second row. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for each row. Stop crocheting at the end of the row when the scarf reaches the desired width.
-
11
Cut the yarn, leaving a 5-inch tail. Carefully remove the loop from the crochet hook. Push the yarn tail through the loop and tie it off in a knot.
-
12
Snip the tail close to the knot and weave the end into the stitches of the scarf to conceal the end.
