How to Troubleshoot Alpha Keys Typing in Numbers
Alpha keys will type numeric characters when your laptop keyboard's Num Lock is on. Num Lock uses alpha keys to represent numbers on smaller-sized keyboards, generally laptops. The alpha keys' M, J, K, L, U, I and O enter numbers instead of letters, when Num Lock is active. These seven alpha keys act like a full-size keyboard's numeric keypad. Turn the Num Lock feature on when entering any number-related data and off when typing normal documents.

1
Press the "Fn" and "F11 (Num Lock)" keys at the same time to turn off a laptop's Num Lock --- depending on the manufacturer of your laptop, this combination can vary. It will say "Num Lock" on the Function key (F1 to F12) that you need to press, if you are not using an Acer laptop.

2
Type a word or sentence, on a blank document, to test whether or not your alpha keys are working correctly.

Restart your computer, if you are having difficulty with the Num Lock key: Click the "Start" button and then the "Restart" option. Windows will restart, and your alpha keys should now type letters instead of numbers.
