The iPad's built-in iBook application can read most books, but additional applications may be needed to read others.

Moving eBooks from the Sony Reader to an iPad requires the reader to first move the books from the device to a computer. After this, the user must transfer the books to the iPad using iTunes, and this is where the issue gets a little more complicated. If the books are digital rights management free, they can be synced easily to the device, however if the books were purchased from the Sony eBookstore, a free third-party application, Bluefire Reader, will be needed to read the books.

Instructions

  1. Transferring DRM free books

    • 1

Connect the Sony Reader to a computer with the USB cable.

    • 2

Click "Open Folder to View Files." If you did not get this message, click "Start," then "Computer," then open the Sony Reader folder under devices.

    • 3

Click on "Database," then "Media," then books.

    • 4

Highlight all of the books in the folder. Drag-and-drop them in to a folder on the computer.

    • 5

Open iTunes, and Click "File," then "Add Folder to Library." Navigate to where you placed the Reader's books, then click "Open." The books will then appear in the library under "Books."

    • 6

Connect your iPad, then click the name under "Devices" in iTunes. To add books without DRM, click the "Books" tab and make sure the "Sync Books" checkbox is checked. Click "Sync." The books should now be accessible within iBooks.

Download "Bluefire Reader" for free from the iTunes app store on the iPad. This application will allow you to read books purchased from the Sony eBookstore. Click the iPad listed under devices, and select the "Apps" tab. Click "Bluefire Reader" under the "File Sharing" panel. Click the "Add" button beneath the "Documents" list. Select the folder containing the eBooks from the Sony Reader. The files will then be transferred. Open "Bluefire Reader" on the iPad. You will be prompted to sign in to your Adobe account. This account will have the same username and password as your Sony eBookstore account. The books will now be authorized to be read in the application.
