How to Make a Canopy for a Stroller

Many simple umbrella strollers don't include a canopy or sun shade 1. However, a canopy can protect your baby from the sun and rain and keep him from having sunlight shining in his eyes 2. A canopy with a window won't obstruct your view of your baby the way a solid one will. A simple, do-it-yourself canopy can be removed from the stroller on shady, dry days, but added when it's needed 1.

Measure the distance between the two handlebars of the stroller and then add 10 inches. Cut the tablecloth to that length (the handlebar distance plus 10 inches) and 14 inches in width 2.

In the very center of the rectangle, fold the tablecloth to cut out a 4-inch by 5-inch square. Sew the clear plastic underneath the cut out in the tablecloth using a zigzag stitch; this will create a window in the canopy through which you can see your baby.

Use pliers to unbend and straighten the coat hangers. Sew a 1/2-inch hem along the short side of the canopy using a straight stitch. Repeat for the other 14-inch side of the rectangle. Feed the straightened coat hanger through the hem on each side.

Use strips of the hook and fastener tape to attach the canopy to the handlebars. Sew the middle of a 5-inch strip to the canopy with a zigzag stitch. Repeat on the opposite side.

Wrap each side of the hook and fastener tightly around the handlebar, pressing the two sides of the fastener tape tightly to each other.

Remove the canopy whenever you don't need it.

Warnings

Be very careful about anything you add to your stroller. Any kind of string or cord can create an entrapment and strangulation hazard to your baby. Never leave your child unattended in the stroller, and don't allow your baby to play with the canopy. If it falls over your baby's face, remove the canopy immediately.
