How to Maintain a Dirt Road Grading Tool

Dirt road grading tools are used to smooth out dirt roads and prevent pot holes by scraping the surface. The tool works by scraping rocks and sediment from the tops of high points along the road and making deposits at low points further down the road. Dirt road grading tools are typically metal so they can withstand the punishment of being dragged down a rough dirt road. Dirt road grading tools can be as simple as a chain attached to an old bed spring, or they can be a commercially manufactured unit consisting of several layers of rakes riding on wheels.

Things You'll Need

• Pressure washer
• Outdoor water spigot
• Water-displacing spray
• Indoor storage space

Instructions

1. Connect the pressurized water unit to an outdoor water spigot. Turn on the water, then turn on the pressure washer.

2. Spray the entire surface of your dirt road grading tool to moisten any dirt stuck to it.

3. Apply a direct spray to all clumps of dirt remaining on the tool until they have become dislodged. There should be no dirt left when finished.

4. Shake the can of water-displacing spray and apply it to the entire metal surface of the grading tool. This will not only prevent rust from forming, it will also remove rust that has already begun to form.

5. Allow the dispersal of the water-displacing spray to dissipate and bring the tool in and out of the elements to prevent corrosion. If the grading tool is fixed to a wheel-and-axle base, grease the axles to ensure a smooth ride next time you use the tool. Being stored inside and away from the elements will also greatly extend the life of the tires.
