How to Make Keychains for Self Defense

How to Make Keychains for Self Defense thumbnail
With the addition of a kubaton, something as innocuous as a keychain can be converted into an effective self-defense tool.

The self-defense keychain is a method of holding keys, as on a keyring, that has been adapted for self-defense. The result is an easily carried device that appears commonplace but can be readily accessed in high risk situations, such as car jacking, assault, or armed robbery.

The most common form of self-defense keychain involves a ring of 10-15 keys attached to a kubaton - a short cylindrical piece of wood or metal, often tapered at one end. Because they have a valid utility function, they are not classified as a weapon in most jurisdictions and thus do not fall under the same restrictions as other means of self-defense, such as a knife or a gun.

Instructions

    • 1

Consult your local, state, and federal laws before proceeding. While in most jurisdictions the use of a kubaton is legal, in some municipalities it may be considered a pressure weapon, which may or may not be restricted.

    • 2

Select a kubaton that already has a key ring attached. These are inexpensive and readily available from a number of online sources, and will be hardier and more durable than anything you could improvise yourself.

    • 3

Add 10-15 keys to the key ring on your kubotan. The addition of a significant number of keys (instead of just 2 or 3) will add weight to the self-defense keychain and will also give your hand more to hold on to.

Seek out instructions on how to use your self-defense keychain via classes, books, videos, or online training materials.

Tips & Warnings

  • Like any self-defense tool, the self-defense keychain should only be used in situations where your life, well-being, or personal property is at jeopardy. You should consult your state and local laws regarding the proper use of force in self-defense.
