How to Find Hidden Emoticons on Skype

How to Find Hidden Emoticons on Skype thumbnail
Skype has a number of hidden emoticons.

Hidden emoticons are an Easter-Egg feature that Skype shares with many other instant messaging programs. The emoticons aren't displayed on the menu of available icons, so the user has to manually enter the code for them. When the code is entered, the person who typed them and the recipient will see the emoticon display. Finding Skype's hidden emoticons takes a little bit of trial and error, and some Internet searching as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Start by understanding how Skype formats the codes for emoticons. Most emoticons in Skype are contained within parentheses, like this:

      (laugh)

    • 2

Go on a fishing expedition for hidden emoticons by plugging different emotions or actions into the parenthetical format; for example, (swear) or (mooning). Skype's hidden emoticons tend to be a little bit more adult in theme than those of other IM services.

    • 3

Use the format given to find hidden emoticons for other businesses Skype has partnered with -- for example, (myspace) or (facebook) show an emoticon with those companies' logos.

    • 4

Enter the following code: (Flag:Canada) or (Flag:USA). Skype has more than 250 flag icons in its hidden emoticons set.

    • 5

Use codes that indicate a particular emotional state or attitude. For example, (bandit), (rock) and (smoking) all are depicted by hidden emoticons.

    • 6

Look up online references for other Skype emoticons. Two fairly solid lists are included as references on this article, and when Skype adds new ones, these lists get updated.
